Alytus is the sixth largest city in Lithuania. With 70,000 residents and 30,000 more in the outlying areas, it is more like a mid-sized German city. Although Alytus is an industrial city (ca. 48% of the economy), the educational rate is 1.2 times higher than the average in Lithuania. Besides high schools, there is a college with good enrollment. Many PC specialists, secretaries and business people receive their education there. Alytus is the youngest city in Lithuania in average age of its citizens. The birthrate in Alytus is just under 2 children per family, which is higher than the Lithuanian average. 97% of all residents in Alytus are Lithuanians. (We belong to a special species.) Most of the working population here are employed by the industrial sector. Production consists mostly of machines and textiles. The official unemployment rate is about 10%, though many earn money on the side. Sadly, the official divorce rate here in Alytus is nearly 75%.
